The Darwine project intends to port and develop Wine as well as other supporting tools that will allow Darwin and Mac OS X users to run Windows Applications.
Darwine allows the Windows API to be created in x11 terminal, and thus run win32 applications through the help of Winehelper.
Darwine is a port of Wine to Mac OS X. The Wine homepage states: Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.
Think of Darwine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Darwine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Darwine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Darwine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Mac OS X as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Mac OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris.
