New COMPETITION PRO for Home computer available!

09

November

Video game pioneers know it - the COMPETITION PRO for Commodore 64 (C64) and Amiga systems won the hearts of the gaming community in the eighties and soon became the most successful joystick of all times. It’s extreme durability and the characteristic clicking of the microswitches ensured its brand recognition. It’s back now! In cooperation with Individual Computers, SPEED-LINK now re-creates the joystick in its classic form: The Competition Pro with a plug for Commodore, Amiga, Atari, Amstrad/Schneider CPC and MSX Systems.

When the Competition Pro was re-released for normal PCs in 2004, the main target was to be true to the original. The design was 100% adopted and characteristics like microswitches, metal stick and the choice of colours are identical. All these details paid off: The SPEED-LINK Competition Pro USB was a huge success.

“As a result of the attention that the re-release of the SPEED-LINK Competition Pro USB has attracted, we received many requests for the original version with a plug for the systems of the eighties. We learned that there are many people who still own the old systems like the Commodore 64.” says Michael Eisenblätter, CEO of Jöllenbeck GmbH. “This led to the idea of reviving the old Competition Pro. The final impulse for putting the project into practice was given by the cooperation with Individual Computers. They have a lot of experience in the field of retro-computing and were of great help in realizing this project.”

Jens Schönfeld of Individual Computers comments: “My personal reason for pushing this project forward is that there’s hardly any supply of used Competition Pro joysticks for the C64. Even the best joysticks have to be replaced after 20 years of hard use. Owners of a working Competition Pro would not part with it. More and more people are digging out their C64s and start the old games that - despite block-graphics - have at least the same fun-factor as today’s photo-realistic PC games. As a direct result, prices on eBay reach outrageous numbers. This is a very good base for a successful re-launch of a high-quality product.”

More details:

  • A real classic, an icon of Retro-Gaming
  • for connection to retro-systems like Amiga, C64, Amstrad/Schneider CPC, Atari, MSX
  • six microswitches, two axles, four firebuttons
  • upper firebuttons can be switched off
  • cable length of two metres (6 ft.)
  • Powered by Individual Computers, the experts for retro-hardware

The SPEED-LINK Competition Pro powered by Individual Computers will be available starting mid-october. The recommended retail price is 12,99 EUR (prices may differ locally due to VAT differencies). Individual Computers is the exclusive distributor for this product.

The growing world of Google Earth

September

Google Inc.’s Michael Jones likes to take pictures with a super high-resolution camera like those used on spy planes during the Cold War.
His fascination is not to monitor military camps but to shoot photos so detailed he can spot, from miles away, a cosy Japanese noodle shop to have lunch in.
Google Earth HR will be available firstly for United States then for English, Japanese, French, Italian, German and Spanish.

FC64: Commodore 64 flash emulator!

15

September

FC64 is an Open-Source Commodore 64 Emulator  licensed under the GPL version 2  way cool (after all it was a flashforward finalist this year). Darron Schall and Claus Wahlers out did themselves with this creation that utilizes the flash 9 player and flex 2! I highly recommend checking it out after all it is open source so at least you can see what makes it tick! Flex 2 has a great deal to offer developers. The over all strategy for Adobe right now is to enable developers to create highly dynamic applications that are for the most part operating system free.

Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator, the game!

16

August

Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator CoverConflict: Middle East Political Simulator is the most interesting political game ever created, as you know israel and the arab countries is a very complex microcosmos. It could have been nice to choose the future by making yourself the israeli prime-minister.

You’re the newly elected Prime Minister of Israel because your predecessor has been assassinated. Your task is to help Israel survive amidst the Arab nations by means of diplomacy and military.

Conflict: MEPS is a fun little strategy game which somehow makes you play it over and over again. You’re starting on a map of the Middle East where your state and all important neighbours (Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordania, Syria, Iraq and Iran) are shown. Each turn you have to determine the policy concerning each country. You can choose whether to improve or spoil diplomatic relations and whether to support or disrupt insurgency groups. Given enough time they can turn a state into turmoil thus rendering it politically powerless.

Having finished diplomacy it’s time for some internal stuff. In the next menu you can buy new weapons, take strategic actions, review your forces, deal with the Palestinian problem and ‘join’ the nuclear club. There are four different weapons dealers: The USA (best equipment, but quite sensitive to aggressive actions which means they stop their shipments), the UK (good stuff, also less sensitive), France (mediocre systems) and a private dealer from South Africa (obsolete equipment, but sometimes the only one to deal with you). You can spend money according to weapons expenditures ratified by your parliament.Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator screenshot

In the strategic actions menu you can deploy troops on the borders of neighbouring countries and invade them when diplomatic lines have been closed. You can also send airstrikes out against civilian, military and industrial targets or against nuclear installations. Reviewing your forces helps you in deciding which battlefield systems to buy next. There are heavy and light tanks, SAMs, helicopters, fighters, surveillance systems and strike aircraft. A good mixture helps in waging successful wars. The Palestinian problem is not really a problem because normally they are quiet. In case of violence you can post a brigade in the Palestinian regions. All major countries are out for nuclear weapons. You can also join the race by regularly funding the research which takes several months.

Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator screenshotBetween the turns you see newspaper reports which tell about riots, upcoming conflicts and other important news. You win the game by being the only country left, but you can´t invade all countries. Iran, Iraq and Libya are too far away so they either have to be invaded by other countries (they all have their own wars) or thrown over by the insurgency (so keep supporting them all the time!). Jordania and Lebanon are easy prey, but Syria and Egypt are hard to beat on the battlefield. Either you invest lots of time in supporting the guerillas or you find allies. Neither country can survive a war on two fronts.

Conflict: Middle East Political SimulatorEvery year there’s a big Middle East summit where you can decide to agree to a Palestinian homeland, promise the US not to increase your army and stuff. Your decisions have strong influence on your relations to the US so choose wisely.

What makes this game so much fun (actually it’s far from being a deep strategic game) is the high replayability. The relations between the countries are determined randomly each time so every game is different. Also Conflict is a quickie to play because a game takes not longer than 10 minutes (mostly less). So if you’re looking for a fun little strategy game don’t look no further - you’ve found it!

Also a new version is in-development, If you wish a actual version there’s also a very interisting open source clone called Conflict.NET available on download for PC Windows.

For other non-windows players there’s the Amiga version to use on Amiga Emulators.
Download Conflict: Middle East Plitical Simulator (PC Windows)
Download Conflict: Middle East Plitical Simulator (Apple Mac OS X)
Download Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator (Amiga)
Download Conflict.NET (the remake! for Windows)

Problem drinkers see soccer-style red cards

06

August

Inspired by the yellow and red penalty cards flashed by football referees, some New Zealand bars are using color-coded cards to help curb excess drinking.

A yellow card is shown to imbibers who may be heading towards trouble during a night at the pub, while a red card removes them from the bar, said Hospitality Association of New Zealand chief executive Bruce Robertson.

In a dozen bars using the cards in the North Island cities of Auckland and Wellington, a yellow card means no alcohol is served to the recipient for a specific period of time.
