Vector

Some of the most memorable arcade games from the 1980s are the hardest to emulate with modern raster-scan monitors. Smash hits like Asteroids, Tempest, Battlezone and Star Wars use vector graphics — straight lines and dots — to generate futuristic images that scroll smoothly across arcade displays. Here’s a brief look at a vector generator that brings these razor-sharp classics into the 21st century.
Zvg The $239 ZVG (Zector’s Video Generator) is a PC-driven vector generator that’s compatible with MAME arcade software. It connects to an ECP-compatible parallel printer port and drives any analog X/Y Monitor including any dual channel oscilloscope that can be set to an X/Y mode. The company even offers a variety of cables to simplify assembly.
“There were more than 30 vector based games made in the 80’s. To acquire a collection that includes all these games would be a monumental feat. Just to find that many vector monitors alone would be no easy task, not to mention the cost! Vector based arcade monitors haven’t been made in 20+ years, and you can’t simply use one vector monitor for all these games. Each monitor has different specs and runs at different speeds, making them incompatible between different gaming hardware. The hardware was unique for most of these games, making multigame conversion kits difficult to design. [until now]”

Commodore 64 returns on Nintendo Wii Virtual Console, DS and PSP!

30

September

“Another visitor. Stay awhile. Stay forever!”

Those words, creepily emulated by a Commodore 64 running the game Impossible Mission, are a nostalgic touchstone for many a gamer. And the goosebumps those words might create are almost as readily replicated by the name of that game’s publisher: Epyx. Those goosebumps might become a recurring problem soon, because System 3 (the development house that changed its name to Studio 3 and then back to System 3) is bringing back the Epyx name, as well as the Epyx games.

System 3 founder Mark Kale told today that the company has secured the rights to the Epyx Games library and is looking to revamp it for today’s systems. The first two projects on the company’s slate are Impossible Mission and California Games.

Following initial speculation, Epyx has revealed it will be bringing certain Commodore 64 titles over to the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console download system.

Before we get into that though, the studio has announced that Gottlieb Pinball Classics and golf sim Leaderboard Golf will be released alongside the Wii in November. We think it’s pretty obvious how the Wii’s remote will be used in either game. Super Fruit Fall is also down for release on PSP and Nintendo DS via Play It around the same time.Winter Games

Impossible Mission is the first Epyx title on the cards, and is on its way to both PSP and DS in full 2D glory. It’s a remake of sorts of the 8-bit original, with two new characters (a robot and a female spy) and a two-player co-op mode. “If Impossible Mission was to be put into 3D it would cease to be Impossible Mission and would only be using the name as the hook,” cited System 3’s CEO Mark Cale.

Next on the agenda is California Games - down for May 2007 on PSP and DS - which will include Summer Games 1 and 2 as unlockables, while Last Ninja (also for the two handhelds) will feature all three of the hugely popular Commodore 64 romps. And we do mean hugely popular - back in the day one-in-four Commodore 64 owners had at least one of the Last Ninja games in their collection.

“You gotta keep the gameplay mechanics the same or else it ceases to be the original game and you’re only using the game brand to sell games,” Kale said. “It ceases to be Impossible Mission or California Games or what have you. … What we’re doing is we’re incorporating the original gameplay and mechanics and bringing the gameplay up to date.” California Games

As for Impossible Mission, kale did confirm that the infamous computerized invitation to “Stay forever!” is already included in the game, and System 3 is even using the original animation for the main character. However, players will be traversing updated backgrounds and will be able to choose from newly created main characters as well, including a female agent and an android.

While emulated versions of the original Impossible Mission and California Games aren’t currently planned to be included in either remake, Kale said the team would examine the possibility, “time permitting.”

As for how System 3 will make use of the Epyx brand beyond its initial wave of titles, don’t expect a cheaply emulated compilation of games anytime soon. Kale said he doesn’t think that’s the right approach to take with old games, so the studio will likely continue to single out the publisher’s highlights and give them remakes that preserve the gameplay.

Other games soon to a remake: Winter Games, Summer Games, Pitstop II and Jumpman Junior!

Xbox Live Arcade to get Sensible Soccer and more!

27

September

A fresh selection of new titles coming toward the 360’s Live Arcade. Doom makes an appearance with added 4 player co-op as well as 5.1 surround and Most important the Amiga version of Sensible World of Soccer!!
The more expansive, management-mode equipped sibling, Sensible World of Soccer will hit the store for XBox live! Sensible Software’s creation ruled the roost for a number of years, back in the industry’s salad days, thanks to a combination of flexibility and utterly compelling gameplay. With Sensible Soccer 2006 for the PS2, Xbox and PC - IP holders Codemasters are apparently again turning their attention to the venerable ‘SWOS’.

A source with insider knowledge apparently told that Codemasters was planning to include the original Amiga version of SWOS as an unlockable extra within the new version of the game, however this plan fell-threw. Issues to do with player and team licensing has been suggested, and this would make sense given the mock-titles used in Sensi 2006. However, the source also reportedly revealed that now Codemasters are considering a revision of the game for the Xbox Live Arcade. Certainly, such a release could well go down a treat, and might introduce a whole new generation of players to the simple joys of footie from a bygone era.

“Live Arcade is a platform we’re evaluating certainly - it’s an exciting area of videogames. There are no announcements to be made at the moment regarding our IP on Live Arcade, Sensible Soccer or otherwise. Ultimately that will come down to demand among games players and we think will work on that platform,” a Codemasters statement responding to this rumour read. Promising? Only time will tell, and much will of course depend on how Sensible Soccer 2006 fairs against the backdrop of fierce, well-established competition. More as we get it.

Turbo Tanks: vectors are alive!

25

September

Turbo Tanks is completely addicting shooting game fun inspired by an old game called Armor attack and also available for Vectrex, a vector graphics console! .

Turbo Tanks is great tank fighting fun featuring excellent computer AI. Can you get all the way to level 15 and defeat two enemy tanks at a time?

Top-view shoot-out. Succinctly summarised up by “It’s fun!”, this is a 1- or 2-player tank battle for anyone who still hasn’t quite got the hang of all those complicated “Rope” controls in Tank Mania.

Turbo Tanks

So, there are only ever two tanks on the screen, but there’s a range of different battlefields made all the more intriguing by the fact that you can bounce your bullets off the walls. The retro graphics are spot-on, the computer’s a surprisingly tough opponent, and the sound effects minimal enough that you can play your favourite military music CDs (or anti-war protest songs) in the background.

Controls: Arrow keys to steer, Ctrl (or Enter) to fire (player one), A, D, W, S to steer, Shift to fire (player two).
Tips & hints: You can take about 10 hits (indicated by the health which counts down from 100), so it’s always worth firing off the maximum 5 bullets (the blobs above the numbers) if you’ve lined up a decent shot.

Build up your bonus lives by taking as few hits from enemy tanks as possible.

Find a good position to take enemy tanks out from. Do not stand still, keep your tank mobile within that good position. Abandon a position if overwhelmed. Move forward when firing and then reverse away after firing when appropriate.

Keep constant fire to keep the enemy off balance. When you fire, turn your tank slightly while letting a volley 5 shots to get a wide range and maximum chance of a hit. The computer tanks can’t as easily avoid a wide volley of shots.

Use angle shots to your advantage. Try to trap enemy tanks in bad positions where shots will richochet all about them and take many hits.

PocketNES, NES emulator for Gameboy Advance & Pocket PC

23

September

PocketNES is a NES emulator which runs on the Game Boy Advance, written by Neal Tew (Loopy) and Fredrik Olsson (Flubba). It can run on a GBA through use of flash cartridges, or with the GBA Movie Player. The emulator has been released into the public domain, yet it remains under active development.

It is believed that PocketNES inspired Nintendo to re-release several of their NES games on the GBA through the e-Reader accessory, Animal Crossing GameCube game link feature, or Classic NES Series collection. Some also believe that the PocketNES emulator has displaced the e-Reader and Classic NES series from store shelves since people could download ROM images for old NES games for free instead.

PocketNES is also an unrelated NES emulator for Pocket PC.
