Darwine

29

August

The Darwine project intends to port and develop Wine as well as other supporting tools that will allow Darwin and Mac OS X users to run Windows Applications.

DarwineDarwine allows the Windows API to be created in x11 terminal, and thus run win32 applications through the help of Winehelper.

Darwine is a port of Wine to Mac OS X. The Wine homepage states: Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.

Think of Darwine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Darwine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Darwine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Darwine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Mac OS X as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Mac OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris.

Frontends for DOSBox

26

August

A DOSBox frontend pulls together the many functions of the program it is for and “stands in front of” it. It makes your life and the configuration a bit simpler.
DOSBox is controlled by its configfile. Frontends are a nice graphical way to maintain or edit that configfile.

If you are a newbie or you don’t like editing dosbox.conf by hand then a frontend is the solution for you.

VDMSound, the alternative of DOSBox

25

August

VDMSoundVDMSound is a program that overcomes what has probably been the most exasperating limitation of DOS boxes since Windows NT - sound support. VDMSound emulates SoundBlaster compatible as well as Adlib music. In development are improvements to the existing joystick emulation, and possibly VESA support. It is a self-contained, 100% software emulation program that is completely independent of your audio hardware type and settings. VDMSound works with any soundcard, and will even work on computers that have no audio hardware at all. This software is highly recommended if your computer is too slow for running DOSBox as it will start most games in regular WinXP command prompt.

DOSBox

DOSBox is an emulator which creates a DOS-like environment intended for running MS-DOS-based PC programs (especially computer games) which may not run properly on newer PCs and may not run at all on non-IBM PC compatibles (e.g. Macintosh). It also allows such games to be run on other operating systems that do not normally support DOS programs or run them too fast with normal compatibility layers. DOSBox is open source and available for many operating system, such as Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, Mac OS X, OS/2 and BeOS. Recently, it has even been ported to the GP2X device.

PocketUAE Launcher

21

August

Pocket UAE LauncherPocketUAE is good and all but it comes with a semi-technical method of configuring which floppies are inserted, which processor to emulate, the graphics chipset that should be emulated from the array of Amiga computers available, hard-drive settings, on and on and on. So, though these items are in development by “Cerial23″ and “Poopi” who are working together on the project, PocketUAE Launcher for Pocket PC comes to make easier the emulation.

PocketUAE, your Pocket Amiga

18

PocketUAE

With the porting of the UAE (the Ultimate Amiga Emulator) to Pocket PC you can play your Amiga stuff again, on your Pocket PC. Download the binary for PocketUAE here. You’ll need to track down those little buggers, you know, the kickstart disks– Kickstart 1.3 and 3.1– remember them?
This is perhaps one of the most important PocketPC emulator ports. It uses UAE as a base, but the the next version will be based on Experimental UAE.

I think I don’t have to say too much, everybody knows Amiga :)

Here are some of the supported features:

  • support for up to 4 Floppy Drives
  • 68000/010/020/040 CPU, optionally a 68881 FPU
  • OCS, ECS and AGA Graphics Chipset (including sprite-playfield collisions)
  • Up to 2MB Chip RAM and up to 8MB Fast RAM, or 8MB Chip RAM without Fast RAM
  • Up to 64MB Zorro III Fast RAM, independent of Chip RAM setting (68020+ only)
  • Up to 1MB Slow RAM, for extended compatibility with problem software
  • A hard-disk: either a harddisk image file or part of the native filesystem
  • Mouse and Joystick support (Stylus and D-Pad on PocketPC)
  • On-Screen Keyboard on QVGA devices

The last release of PocketUAE brings the long awaited support for configurable buttons (finally). You also have the option now to choose between 2 different graphic drivers (GAPI/DIB). With the DIB driver you may run PocketUAE in windowed mode again. Additionally, a mode for lefthanded people was added. Another option, which may be useful for a lot of people which have start-up problems, is ‘debugoutput’. With this option enabled, PocketUAE logs its output to two files ’stdout.txt’ & ’stderr.txt’. Finally tracked down a bug in the sound output driver which slowed PocketUAE down alot. With this bug fixed PocketUAE runs much faster here and without sound problems for most games; sometimes even with a frameskip of 2 & CPU/Chip ratio of 7! Try to select to smallest ‘Max. Sound Buffer’ value [2048] and a frequency of 11,025 Hz; if you get hickups in the sound enlarge your buffer a bit and try again. As always, the downloadable package includes the latest version of Munk’s PocketUAE Launcher (which of course supports all the new options like button setting, etc.) However, there some things left to do:On-screen keyboard is not available when running under the DIB video driver Keyboard drawing problem when using lefthanded mode and GAPI video driver (keyboard is on the top of the screen and rotated)

Ismail Khatib had made available the first Commodore Amiga emulator that runs on your small Pocket PC screen.

Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator, the game!

16

August

Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator CoverConflict: Middle East Political Simulator is the most interesting political game ever created, as you know israel and the arab countries is a very complex microcosmos. It could have been nice to choose the future by making yourself the israeli prime-minister.

You’re the newly elected Prime Minister of Israel because your predecessor has been assassinated. Your task is to help Israel survive amidst the Arab nations by means of diplomacy and military.

Conflict: MEPS is a fun little strategy game which somehow makes you play it over and over again. You’re starting on a map of the Middle East where your state and all important neighbours (Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordania, Syria, Iraq and Iran) are shown. Each turn you have to determine the policy concerning each country. You can choose whether to improve or spoil diplomatic relations and whether to support or disrupt insurgency groups. Given enough time they can turn a state into turmoil thus rendering it politically powerless.

Having finished diplomacy it’s time for some internal stuff. In the next menu you can buy new weapons, take strategic actions, review your forces, deal with the Palestinian problem and ‘join’ the nuclear club. There are four different weapons dealers: The USA (best equipment, but quite sensitive to aggressive actions which means they stop their shipments), the UK (good stuff, also less sensitive), France (mediocre systems) and a private dealer from South Africa (obsolete equipment, but sometimes the only one to deal with you). You can spend money according to weapons expenditures ratified by your parliament.Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator screenshot

In the strategic actions menu you can deploy troops on the borders of neighbouring countries and invade them when diplomatic lines have been closed. You can also send airstrikes out against civilian, military and industrial targets or against nuclear installations. Reviewing your forces helps you in deciding which battlefield systems to buy next. There are heavy and light tanks, SAMs, helicopters, fighters, surveillance systems and strike aircraft. A good mixture helps in waging successful wars. The Palestinian problem is not really a problem because normally they are quiet. In case of violence you can post a brigade in the Palestinian regions. All major countries are out for nuclear weapons. You can also join the race by regularly funding the research which takes several months.

Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator screenshotBetween the turns you see newspaper reports which tell about riots, upcoming conflicts and other important news. You win the game by being the only country left, but you can´t invade all countries. Iran, Iraq and Libya are too far away so they either have to be invaded by other countries (they all have their own wars) or thrown over by the insurgency (so keep supporting them all the time!). Jordania and Lebanon are easy prey, but Syria and Egypt are hard to beat on the battlefield. Either you invest lots of time in supporting the guerillas or you find allies. Neither country can survive a war on two fronts.

Conflict: Middle East Political SimulatorEvery year there’s a big Middle East summit where you can decide to agree to a Palestinian homeland, promise the US not to increase your army and stuff. Your decisions have strong influence on your relations to the US so choose wisely.

What makes this game so much fun (actually it’s far from being a deep strategic game) is the high replayability. The relations between the countries are determined randomly each time so every game is different. Also Conflict is a quickie to play because a game takes not longer than 10 minutes (mostly less). So if you’re looking for a fun little strategy game don’t look no further - you’ve found it!

Also a new version is in-development, If you wish a actual version there’s also a very interisting open source clone called Conflict.NET available on download for PC Windows.

For other non-windows players there’s the Amiga version to use on Amiga Emulators.

UAE - Unix Amiga Emulator

14

August

UAE is a mostly complete software emulation of the hardware of the Commodore Amiga 500/1000/2000.
A Commodore Amiga, for those who don’t know, is a 16/32 bit computer system based on the Motorola 680×0 CPU and a few specially designed custom chips that provide very good graphics and sound capabilities. Its first incarnation, the A1000, appeared in 1985, followed by the highly successful A500 and A2000 models.

UAE is written for Unixish systems; it is developed on a Linux machine but it should compile and run on any half-recent Unix-like operating system. It has also been ported to a wide variety of machines and operating systems, including DOS, Windows 95/NT, MacOS, RiscOS, BeOS and NextStep.

UAE is free software: you are welcome to distribute copies of it and/or modify it, under certain conditions. There is no warranty of any kind for UAE. For more details concerning these issues, please read the GNU General Public License, which describes the terms under which UAE is distributed.

UAE emulates the following hardware:

  • A 68000/010/020/040 CPU, optionally a 68881 FPU
  • OCS, ECS and AGA Graphics Chipset (including sprite-playfield collisions)
  • Up to 2MB Chip RAM and up to 8MB Fast RAM, or 8MB Chip RAM without Fast RAM
  • Up to 64MB Zorro III Fast RAM, independent of Chip RAM setting (68020+ only)
  • Up to 1MB Slow RAM, for extended compatibility with problem software
  • Up to 8MB of graphics card memory, usable by software that supports Picasso 96 compatible graphics cards
  • 4 x 3.5″ floppy disk drives (DF0:, DF1:, DF2: and DF3:). It’s not possible to read Amiga disks, so these are emulated with disk files.
  • A hard-disk: either a harddisk image file or part of the native filesystem
  • Joystick support (with option of mapping joystick to numeric keypad)
  • Mouse support
  • Ability to run in various screen modes (for better display quality or better speed)
  • Full stereo sound support, consisting of 4 x 8bit channels
  • Simple parallel and serial port support. Note: the parallel port is not really implemented. Though it’s sufficient for printing.
  • state-saving. you can save the state of your emulated Amiga and continue later on.
  • some other things which don’t work well enough to mention them here…
